NIYO partnered with HMP Swinfen Hall to deliver an 8-week structured hair care education programme for 12 male residents — teaching practical Afro and textured hair skills, building self-confidence, and addressing a longstanding gap in access to appropriate hair care products. The programme also resulted in Afro hair products being stocked on the prison canteen for the first time.

THE BRIEF

Closing the gap in textured hair care within a custodial setting

HMP Swinfen Hall identified a significant unmet need: Black and mixed-heritage male residents had no structured access to Afro hair care education, nor appropriate products available through the canteen. The institution approached NIYO to design and deliver a practical, skills-based programme — one that would empower residents to maintain their own hair with confidence, dignity, and the right tools.

A secondary goal was to ensure suitable Afro hair products became available on the canteen — something that had not previously been offered.

THE SOLUTION

An 8-week hands-on programme + curated hair care boxes

NIYO designed and delivered a structured 8-week hair care curriculum for 12 participants, covering washing and maintaining Afro hair, plaiting, cornrowing, twisting, loc maintenance, and understanding hair products and ingredients. Sessions were facilitated by a NIYO specialist with lived experience of textured hair — creating an environment built on genuine connection, trust, and peer learning.

Alongside the programme, NIYO curated personalised hair care product boxes for all 12 participants and worked with the institution to introduce shampoo, conditioner, and hair oil to the canteen listing — a first for the prison.

THE OUTCOME

End-of-programme feedback from all 12 participants returned unanimous results: every person rated the programme useful, every person reported greater confidence in maintaining their own hair. 75% were aware of the new canteen products, and 42% had already made purchases within weeks of launch. Every single participant agreed that access to appropriate hair care products improves confidence and wellbeing — and all 12 called for the initiative to continue.
